Chapter 18: Using Adminstrative Data to Study Hospice Care: Author Biography
        

Beth A. Virnig, PhD, MPH, is an epidemiologist who is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Health Services Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. She has over 12 years experience working with Medicare data. Dr. Virnig is a co-investigator on Research Data Assistance Center (ResDAC) project and leads the ResDAC training workshop activities. For the past three years, she has presented a graduate level course on the use of administrative data. She has been the lead author or has co-authored many papers in examining use of the Medicare Hospice benefit. Her other areas of interest include Medicare Managed Care and Cancer Care.

Sara Kind, MS, is a statistician who is a research fellow in the Division of Health Services Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. She has worked on studies of cancer care and end-of-life care for five years. She was the lead analyst on a series of papers examining patterns of hospice use prior to death and worked on efforts to develop an algorithm to identify incident cancer cases from Medicare data. She has presented several posters on the results of these projects and is co-author on several papers. She also is a Technical Advisor for ResDAC.
