Chapter 15: Challenges to the Study of Insomnia and Sleep Loss: Exercise in Protocol Design to Study Stress and Insomnia

You are designing a study of stress arousal and activation in adults (18-50 years old) with psychophysiologic-type insomnia. You will recruit subjects who have no major physical or mental illness or sleep disorders like sleep apnea, periodic leg movements, or narcolepsy, do not engage in "shift work" or have evidence of circadian disruptions, and are not taking sleep-active or psychoactive medications. Subjects who drink more than 250 mg of caffeine per day or have been in a drug or alcohol abuse program in the past year will also be excluded.

Question 3.2.1

Which of the following statements represents the strongest sample selection description:
Selection A
Using a telephone screening tool, select subjects who report a history of taking >45 min. (at least 4 nights/week) to fall asleep and who have 60 min. awake time during the night (at least 4 nights/week). Also use to select control subjects who report <30 min. to fall asleep and less than 30 min. of wake time after falling asleep on any night.
Selection B
Select subjects reporting insomnia and who, after completing a 1 or 2 week log of bedtimes, nighttime awakenings (number and duration), and arising times, meet log scoring criteria of taking >45 min, at least 4 nights/week, to fall asleep and being awake at least 60 min. during the night on at least 4 nights/week. Also select control subjects who report taking <30 min. to fall asleep on any night and less than 30 min. of wake time after falling asleep.
Selection CSelect subjects with and without insomnia matched on age (within 5 years), gender, and body mass index and who meet the log score criteria as described in 2.
