The Gold Standard of Research Design

Current research has led to a consensus regarding certain aspects of the design of major antiemetic studies (Morrow et al., 1998).

  • The optimum design is a randomized, double-blind parallel arm design.
  • The trial must have adequate power to detect clinically meaningful differences.
  • Previously identified prognostic factors should be considered and properly accounted for among the arms of the study.
  • Adequately measured primary and secondary end-points need to be clearly identified in advance.
